Getaway to Spain, Málaga

ree

Winter already started in the UK, and since I originally came from a humid country, Singapore, I do miss the sun. Malaga is unique destination in Europe and it is located by the seaside which is just amazing as I love beaches. It is a small city and you can definitely reach places on foot or by bus/train. Another great thing to stay in the UK is that you can do short trips to Europe or to other closeby countries. It was a 3 hours flight from the UK, Newcastle to Spain, Malaga.

How I planned it? Well besides Google, I used Pinterest and Instagram for ideas and travel tips. I trust TripAdvisor too especially for food(cafes, restaurants). I will put together a 2-day itinerary in Malaga below.

Accommodation:

I stayed in an Airbnb, hosted by Pablo and it was a great place, affordable(£40/night) and peaceful location. Besides having the entire place, it was exactly to pictures and descriptions. The sweetest thing was the Pablo gave a welcoming snack, chocolates! This area was located 10mins away from the city and I enjoyed my walks. I highly recommend this place!

I wanted to stay in Hostels as I found some amazing Hostels in the heart of Malaga, so do check it out on Hostelsworld if you want to get that hostel experience. I stayed in hostels on my previous Thailand trip for two weeks and I love it! Trust me, hostels are worth the stay if you love backpackers kind of chill vibe and provided, you choose it well.

Seafood Paella

The walk towards Gibralfaro takes about 15-20mins from Alcazaba. It is a walk up the hill, few steep slopes along the way but great exercise though. There are transport(car/van) if you are not planning to walk up, check this at the Alcazaba counter.

If you are walking, bring a bottle of water! It will get really tiring, and I used to be an athlete so trust me on this. During the walk, there will be a viewpoint overlooking the Plaza de Toros. There will be locals selling water for €1-3 near the viewpoint.

Lunch I had paella and tea, in a restaurant close to the Picasso Museum and a lovely view of the Cathedral.

The price for the seafood paella was €16 for two and it was filling! Halal restaurants can be found everywhere, I was amazed at how convenient it is to find halal food here.

Wander around the alleys and admire the old historic centre. You don't need a mode of transport around the city. Do your shopping at Calle Larios or Centro Comercial Larios(biggest shopping mall in Malaga). If you visit Malaga during winter as I did, you will be able to experience Christmas Lights and Christmas events happening around that street from 6.00 pm onwards! There was a group of talented and adorable children singing Christmas songs in Spanish, so don’t miss it! You will love the atmosphere during that time of the year. For dinner, I tried Morrocan food at a very known restaurant in Malaga but they are a few other known restaurants as well.

Mia Coffee House

We hit the Atarazanas market in the morning and everything in there was so fresh! Fish, oysters, crabs........and halal butchers! I was so amazed because I can’t find this in Newcastle. Adding on, it is such a pretty building from the outside, who knows that is a market right?

No matter where I go, I will look for a cafe and this time I settled on Mia Coffee House. It was located in the Malaga city and right beside Hammam. Not only Mia coffee was affordable €1.70 for cappuccino and it was smooth too!

And they have a takeaway pop-out window too!

You will have plenty of time and if there is nothing else planned and shopping is not what you came for, I recommend you to hit the beach again and just relax. Have some drinks and freshly grilled seafood by the beach while watching the sunset!

Or another amazing idea is to do a road trip here and head to Seville, you won't regret it!
