Jobs on Campus, Newcastle University

Updated: Sep 11, 2020

As a graduating student, it is time to think of how to build our career. You can start small by improving your CV by taking part-time jobs, signing up for volunteer work, apply for internships or shadowing, and one thing that you can simply do is apply for awards that will help you with your future careers. You will gain new skills and also improve your current skills however as a student, the main important skill is good time management so your studies would not be affected. Newcastle University Career Services is available online and is located on campus too, King's Gate. The career website is such an interesting, organised, detailed site that delivers great service, CV examples, etc and guidance not only for a career but also for further studies. King's Gate is the central point for information and advice, for students and the public. It houses the careers service, Student Services (iTeam) as well as administration such as Marketing & Communications, Admissions, Student Recruitment, International Office, Finance, Alumni, HR and the Executive Office.

What awards that is useful for future jobs?

These awards information can be found in the Newcastle University Career Services. It can be achieved easily during your University years, so don’t miss out on these great awards provided by the University. Check the website as it will explain when the application starts, how to apply and what is needed to be done. I have received my ncl+ award and my ncl+ Advanced Award in Research through my email and currently, I added it on my LinkedIn account. Personally, after applying these awards I am motivated to take part in more events.

NCL Careers Service

It is best to stay updated on their websites and follow @nclcareers on Instagram as they will update on any upcoming events such as CV writing, Interviews preparing sessions, cover letter writing and etc. I am active on social media, which is why I prefer checking the career services on Instagram as they will put up stories daily and you can just send a private message if you have any enquiries. I suggest attending these services and engaging with them directly, they are such friendly people!

I personally went for the CV services at King's Gate and it was so useful, and I didn't realise how helpful the services were even when the information was already given on the website. Each consultation with the advisers takes up about 15-20 minutes. So simply, just drop in during your breaks with a printed CV or etc and wait for your turn. They are sweet and friendly people, so don’t be afraid if you are clueless about what you are doing. I spoke to one of the advisers, Dan and it was a great experience as he thoroughly reviews my current CV and pinpoints where and what I should make changes to.

I had prepared a CV but the structure and format were different as I took this from the classes I attended in Singapore. I was clueless that it could be so different in another country and learned this only after my CV appointment with Dan as he pointed out that CV in the UK should only be 2 pages long. They are a few CV examples for different courses and are available online on their website.

Where else can you find work opportunities?

It can be found on their websites as you can see above, and follow their Instagram as they did short clips on where you could look for internal job opportunities within the university. Look up NCL Spark, which can also be found on the website too, for work opportunities only in Newcastle. So, if you are studying in Newcastle(like myself) and want to work in Newcastle, do read more into it.

Being part of the JobsOC team at Newcastle University

I will share with you my experience at JobsOC Newcastle University. I applied online during their recruitment dates on the Newcastle University website, then I was shortlisted for an interview and in October 2019 I was selected to be part of the team. I was truly delighted when I received the news via email, and I was invited to the Welcome Session. I made new friends during my experience and I love interacting with others! There are loads of opportunities given by JobsOC.

I love the flexibility given for JobsOC as you can select which shift and days you are able to work. This allows me to plan ahead and since it is my final academic year, I will only take short work shifts. Another key point about being in JobsOC is that you are able to add more roles to your current roles after being part of the team, for example, administration. After being in the team for 5 months, I decided to sit for the clerical test so I can work in Administration. JobsOC allows me to expand my work skills and strengthen it too, giving me the opportunity to be in numerous work roles on the campus. I extremely blessed to be given this opportunity to be part of the JobsOC team, and the lovely staff I have met.

My experience with JobsOC

Catering

I worked with the Congregation Newcastle University 2019 in December. Since it was the winter season, the Congregation took place in Hadrian Building Hall. I was excited to work for this event as I would like to know how my graduation will be. I am graduating(hopefully!) by July 2020! I saw the graduates and their families, they were so happy and it made at ease when I served them well.

My role is to support the catering team EAT@Newcastle, to set up the tables for drinks and desserts, tidy up for every session and to serve everyone with a drink either alcoholic or non-alcoholic drinks. Most importantly, maintain good hygiene while dealing with food in which the past experience I had in the Food and Beverage industry in Singapore became useful.

There are a lot of interesting and various work opportunities given by JobsOC, and the hours are very flexible! Hours range from 1 hour - 6 hours, depends on the events/projects and you will be paid £10/hour. Few other examples of the work opportunities given: internships, invigilator, student reviewer and etc.

Types of role available:

(you can select as many roles as you want, I selected 5 roles)

  • Catering

  • Administration

  • Cleaning

  • Customer Service

  • Events Assistance

  • IT/Technical support

  • Library Assistants

  • Marketing/Media

  • Using Languages

A few weeks ago I shared my personal experience with Romany, a Student Employment Assistant and she has written a simple article that will be up on the NCL Career Service site. I had a great chat with Romany! I will add a link as soon as the article is up. Do give it a read and support the NCL Career Service!

They are the sweetest people ever xx
