Student Ambassador of Newcastle University

This is just a short post about my experience as a Student Ambassador at Newcastle University. I was blessed to be given this opportunity as it was pretty competitive to be part of Newcastle University Student Ambassador. There were only 200 - 300 Student Ambassadors at Newcastle University, so they will only recruit probably 100 new Student Ambassadors or less per year out of the thousands of application they received each recruitment. Out of my group of friends and coursemates, I was probably the only few ones that were selected for this position and for JobsOC too (I wrote about this in my previous post).

After being shortlisted based on my personal statement, I had to undergo 7 short circuit interviews continuously with probably 2 minutes break in-between the interviews. It was definitely a good experience as this helped me prepare for future job interviews. My main roles were to conduct campus tours for prospective students during Open Days and Holder Days. There were tons of other work opportunities, which I was sadly unable to participate due to school work, do read on the Newcastle University site for more information.

Why I joined the Student Ambassador team?

I am a sociable and approachable person as I mainly enjoy meeting new people, which is why I joined the Student Ambassadors at Newcastle University. It was a great experience as I was able to share my personal experience as an international student and how I was coping with my final year project at that time 2019/2020. In addition, I joined the Dementia Friends UK at Newcastle to support and spread awareness for people with dementia.

There are a lot of interesting and various work opportunities given for Student Ambassadors and sometimes we are called out to help the JobsOC team, and the hours are very flexible! Hours range from 1 hour - 6 hours, depends on the events/projects and you will be paid £10.09/hour. The Student Ambassador team will email you through your student email regarding new jobs opportunities so that is how you could choose your jobs that fit in your schedule.

These are the topics that were usually asked during Open Days and Holder Days:

- personal view for my Undergraduate Course: Biomedical Sciences

- personal experience in living at a private student accommodation

- foreign exchange opportunities for different courses

- student accommodation with the University, brochures showing more accommodations options

- tips to go around Newcastle

- services provided by the University eg virtual tours (can be found online)

- academic talks

Every Student Ambassador will receive a polo tee (2019/2020 edition) and a magnetic name tag for free. I am in love with the name tag, it looks so professional, isn't it?

I left the polo tee in the UK since I am currently back in Singapore, but I brought back the name tag in my wallet hehe

Lets' be honest, I couldn't possibly remember every part and the history of the campus right?

So the Student Ambassador team came up with these flashcards so I could go through it during the Campus Tours & Holder Days. It is so useful, especially for me since my classes are only at the Medical School area. However, you need to return these flashcards back to King's Gate front desk.

This is the end of this blog post! Do let me know if I should add any other information.
